What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are meant to replace areas in a tooth that have been compromised by decay. When you have a cavity, the decay is removed, and a tooth-colored filling is put into its place. Dental fillings are long-lasting, durable and can improve the integrity and structure of an otherwise compromised tooth. The procedure to have a dental filling placed is done easily and quickly in our office.

Why do you need Dental Fillings?

Most often, a dental filling is needed because one or more of your teeth have been compromised by decay. When you have a cavity that has not yet reached the inner pulp of the tooth, a simple filling can be placed. The filling is meant to improve the structural integrity of the tooth, prolonging its life. Another reason why you might need a dental filling is that you may have an older metal filling that you would like to replace with a composite filling.

What makes you a good candidate for Dental Fillings?

To determine if you need a dental filling, you’ll need to come in for an exam. The exam determines where the cavity is located and the type of filling that is needed. Most people who have cavities can have a filling placed. However, if you have a very deep cavity or if the decay has reached the inner pulp of the tooth, a root canal may be needed.

What happens during the procedure for Dental Fillings?

You will receive anesthesia in the area where the filling will be placed. The decay is removed from the tooth using a slow speed drill. The hole that’s been created is then prepared for the composite resin material. The filling is placed and smoothed into place for a more comfortable fit. The composite material is cured using a bright blue light. You can expect your new filling to last for many years before needing to be replaced. Fillings are durable, long-lasting and blend seamlessly into the rest of your smile.
