What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are used to restore the strength and functionality of teeth that have been compromised. Crowns are often placed on teeth that have received a root canal as well as those that have broken, cracked, or fractured. Crowns are durable and long-lasting, providing you with a reliable dental restoration. At Generations Family Dentistry, we offer ceramic, porcelain, and even same-day CEREC dental crowns.

Why do you need Dental Crowns?

You may need a dental crown if a tooth has been compromised in any way. With the help of an examination and x-ray, Dr. Motii can determine if a dental crown is the right option for you. Some of the reasons you may want or need a dental crown include:

  • A tooth has had a root canal
  • A tooth has been severely broken, fractured or cracked
  • A tooth has a very large filling or a lot of decay
  • You have recently had a dental implant placed

What makes you a good candidate for Dental Crowns?

To determine if dental crowns are right for you, you will need to come in for a consultation and examination. Dr. Motii will assess the tooth’s condition and determine whether or not it would benefit from a crown. Most often, a tooth that has been compromised will benefit from a full dental crown. Because crowns are made to last a long time, you can expect a restoration that is durable and reliable.

What happens during the procedure for a Dental Crown?

Anesthesia will be applied to the area that will be receiving the crown to make the procedure more comfortable for you. The tooth is then filed down to make room for the dental crown to be placed. For porcelain and ceramic crowns, impressions are made and sent to a dental lab. The crown is made for you and is then placed once it comes back into our office. For same-day CEREC crowns, digital impressions are made, and a crown is created for you while you sit in the office. It is then permanently placed, preventing you from having to come back for a second appointment.
