Losing a crown can be uncomfortable or painful for patients, and may cause some concern. Crowns can pop off and require dental attention. This is because the tooth underneath is exposed, and can be sensitive to air temperature.

There is no need to panic if you are faced with a crown that has fallen off. Please call our office immediately and our friendly staff will have you come in right away.

There are a few things patients can do in the meantime to help alleviate pain before they visit our office.

Tips if your crown has fallen off:

  • Call and schedule an appointment to get your crown reattached and let us know it fell off. We will make sure you can get into our office as soon as possible.
  • You can buy temporary dental adhesive and try to put the crown back into place. Carefully clean the area before using the adhesive. You must also be careful not to chew anything hard or sticky, because this dental adhesive is not as strong as permanent adhesive.
  • If you have pain around the area because nerves may have been exposed when the crown fell off you can purchase clove oil from the store. The clove oil can be applied around the tooth with a cotton swab. This can help alleviate pain and numb the area. Over the counter pain medication can be taken also to help with the pain.
  • Avoid sweet or acidic foods or drinks. This can cause further pain or even decay.

It is important to get into our office right away so no further damage occurs. Our skilled staff will look at the area and determine if a new crown is needed. We will discuss all the options with you to ensure you understand what needs to be done.
